Mars and Venus with Dr. John Gray

Kala speaks with John Gray about his newest book, Why Mars and Venus Collide. The enduring message from John Gray is that men and women are indeed from different planets. This truth has not changed since the publication of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus. In fact, the differences between the sexes have become more evident in today's hectic, fast-paced world. Except now, the monster known as stress has become a main ingredient in our lives and it has successfully invaded our relationships. Once upon a time, there was a lifestyle where men went to work and women stayed home. In today's society, you're more likely to find the power couple. They both go to work (for longer than just 9 to 5) and they are overworked, underpaid, and overstressed. They both struggle to excel in the same status-hungry society and hectic, competitive, career-oriented environment. Couples come home to each other -- and instead of being comforted by each other, a new set of problems begin. And most of these challenges can be chalked up to one main ingredient: stress.

More About Dr. John Gray:
John Gray is the author of 15 best-selling books, including Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, the number one best-selling relationship book of the last decade. In the past ten years, over 30 million Mars and Venus books have been sold in over 40 languages throughout the world. An expert in the field of communication, John Gray's focus is to help men and women understand, respect and appreciate their differences in both personal and professional relationships. In his many books, CDs, DVDs, tapes, workshops and seminars, he provides practical tools and insights to effectively manage stress and improve relationships at all stages and ages by creating the brain chemistry of health, happiness and lasting romance. Dr. John Gray has appeared on Oprah, The Today Show, CBS Morning Show, Good Morning America, The View, Politically Incorrect, Larry King, and others. He has been profiled in Newsweek, Time, Forbes, USA Today, TV Guide, and People , among others. John Gray, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of communication and relationships, is the author of fifteen books, was a certified marriage and family therapist for over 15 years, and has been conducting personal-growth seminars for over thirty years. John Gray lives with his wife and three children in Northern California. More info at: http://www.marsvenus.com

Folkloric Arts with Patricia Banker

Art from - and for - the Heart, Spirit, Mind, Body, and Soul. FolkloricArts(TM) is the offspring of PatriArts(TM) and Saints Preserved(TM). Over the past decade, in doing research for the Saints series, Patricia Banker came to realize how many of them are related to classic folklore - Jungian Archetypes. Quite honestly, she hadn't given much thought to Carl Jung's theories since Psych 101 in college. Now she has come to appreciate his theory of synchronicity as she made connections with her "patrons," her work, and her personal life. Through experiences, she's become less skeptical and more spiritual. A century ago, Jung maintained that "modern" humans rely too heavily on science and logic. He felt we needed to integrate spirituality and appreciation of the unconscious realm, and emphasized the importance of seeking balance and harmony. Jung came of age during the Arts & Crafts movement. The more Patricia delved into it, the more she realized that she had a special affinity for Celtic folklore, which coincides with her long held love of the Pre-Raphaelites (they "rediscovered" the Celts) and the Arts & Crafts movement. Patricia works within the same spirit, using methods, media, and materials beyond Morris' and Mackintosh's wildest fantasies...

More About Patricia Banker:
First, let me clarify: I am no saint. I make them...from clay, glass, metal, paint...and other media...using historical references. and I probably make them in another sense as well... Expeditus was not the first saint I sculpted, but he's become my personal "patron." My tendency toward procrastination has at times been legendary. I'm afraid that I may well have nudged family and friends closer to sainthood (I'm sure they'll thank me someday!) as they patiently waited for me to get around to doing something I was supposed to do. Some long-suffering college roommates once even stayed up all night to help me finish a put-off art project that was due the next day. I have phone calls waiting to be returned; wedding gifts, thank-you notes and greeting cards waiting to be sent. Some of them have been waiting for years...I don't need to get into the psychological reasons here...I'll just refer you to this area of helpful links on Expeditus' page.

However, I do somehow seem to get a few things done...and the older I get the more I realize just how little time I've got left to do the rest! But just so I don't come across as a some sort of dallying dilettante, I'll list some things I have managed to accomplish: I did obtain degrees in Art and English (with the help of those roommates!) from a fairly prestigious (at least according to their promotional literature) university. I found - and have stayed married to - a great guy for 26 years. I've raised (with a tremendous amount of help from their dad) 3 boys to the ages of 24, 23, & 21 who (so far) have brought us much more joy than pain. I've edited and published 4 books, one of which still generates enough income to enable me to occasionally buy someone else's book. I have been the editor of 3 magazines (spanning 8 years), somehow making sure most deadlines got met. I wrote a nationally syndicated newspaper column for 5 years (okay, I probably did miss a few deadlines). I owned a full-services design studio that generated enough income to pay my bills until, in a state of postpartum psychosis, I started my own magazine. I taught art in both public and parochial schools. In fact, my whole life I've felt slightly out of sync...doing something just because it felt like the right thing, even though others saw it as weird or peculiar. I've learned to accept it as a compliment when the very people who smirked at something I was doing, turn around and do the same thing 5 years later because now it has become cool or trendy. And I continue to have a lot of expensive "learning experiences." I think that's why these saints appeal to me so much. They did what they were inspired to do, despite public opinion and "common" wisdom. The similarity stops there, however: The most painful torture I've yet to endure at the hands of adversaries is boredom; I'm still trying to figure out my own "spirituality;" and no saint would ever write this much about herself! Enlighten Up with Stand Up Comedian Vanda!

Vanda Mikoloski began her stand-up comedy career in 1982 at Catch a Rising Star in New York City, where she was a late-night emcee. She toured nightclubs and colleges in the U.S. and Canada for 15 years. Her television appearances include Showtime's "Comedy Club Network", "Comic Strip Live" and Lifetime Network's "Girl's Night Out." Vanda was voted the "Funniest person in Washington" in Showtime’s "Funniest Person in America" contest in 1987.

As a yoga and meditation teacher, she toured with award-winning country/pop artists, The Dixie Chicks on their 2000 "Fly" tour for 6 1/2 months, as well as rock sensation Patty Griffin. She makes her home now in Venice, CA., nurturing her third career as a "Spiritual Quantum Comic" using all of the knowledge, wisdom and nonsense she’s acquired from influences such as the movies, What The Bleep Do We Know and The Secret, Ramana Maharshi, Eckhart Tolle, David Deida, Landmark Education, 12-step work, A Course in Miracles, Byron Katie, Ram Das and various channeled entities to inspire people through laughter. Vanda says "Standing on those shoulders, I intend to expand consciousness by stirring up and promoting ‘irreverent reverence,’ and to uplift, heal and connect people through laughter… I would like to help people grow limbs back and such." "The most amazing Masters I have ever met are amazing because of how accessible they are as human beings, because of how they listen to others … and how responsible they are in regards to generating their realities and how insignificant they are about their inherent value. They know that they are The Great Nothing/Everything. And that’s something."

Her work is a delightful, irreverent romp down her twisted spiritual path. Vanda's comedy deals with the human predicament, the trap of the egoic mind and the absurdity of it all. Vanda’s passion is personal growth and development. She offers powerful spiritual distinctions in a ridiculously funny way that leaves the audience inspired. She begins by questioning our point of view about our point of view and then challenges many of our spiritual beliefs and beliefs about reality, riffingpassionately about enlightenment, quantum physics, the nature of and pitfalls of being a human being, personal growth, spirituality, metaphysics, yoga, meditation, peace and love.

Rebellious Dreamer and Angels Are Everywhere with Singer/Songwriter Joy Adler

Rare, Stunning, transcending; Joy Adler is an extraordinary vocalist who sings from the depths of her being and risks revealing it to the world! Although self taught, Joy knew how to master the art of singing by studying and reproducing sounds she heard from her greatest teachers, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin. She spent hours attempting to replicate their vocal gymnastics and transform them into a sound of her own. Although her voice has been compared to Sarah McLachlan and Jewel, she has an astonishing ability to sing almost any musical genre. Joy says, “The strength of all the great artists is that they would allow the world to see their unique essence, by baring their souls onstage. This is what I seek to do.” But singing is not Joy’s only forte. She is a songwriter who can write with honesty and frankness and combines her talents with expressive openness to provide the listener with something of an extraordinary experience. Her abilities can transport you to the heights of the angels or to the depths of despair, with a rich tonal quality and expansive range.

More About Joy Adler:
In 1999, Joy was presented with an award from “The Rebellious Dreamer Foundation”. This grant is given to women of exceptional talent and provides them with mentoring and financial support. She used this award to produce her CD of critically acclaimed original material, aptly named; Rebellious Dreamer. While it is not often in the music industry, that someone comes along to challenge and raise the level of performance and songwriting in subtle yet profound ways, Joy seems to be doing just that. Joy has performed on stages all over the world. In January, 2003, Joy was crowned The Royal Caribbean’s Idol Search Champion Female Vocalist. In addition to still occasionally performing with other artists, Joy was joined creatively by the multi-talented Eileen O'Brien from New Hampshire who played both piano and the haunting harmonica that you hear on the CD, as well angel-voiced Mary Page from Vermont on vocal harmonies. Eileen also co-wrote "Rebellious Dreamer" and "Coming Home. Joy also records for many different artists and her goal is to score music for film and television. “Joy Adler, vocalist extraordinaire, is bound to become a household name. Her soulful style has a power and a presence that stirs the sleepy spirit,” says Brenda Stinson, Author of “The Journey is Where the Jewels Lie”. - Joy Adler is just that…a rare jewel.

Journey into the world of music, spirit and meditation with SOULPATH

Let us take you on a journey. A journey into the world of music, spirit and meditation. Turn off the light and make yourself comfortable. Place your feet securely on the floor and relax your hands safely in your lap. Are you ready? Then we shall begin ... Enter the world of Soulpath, a UK band with music to charm the world, relax the body and soothe the spirit and mind. Described as a fusion of Enya, Clannad and Dido their music is something else with its own unique style and sound with talents of Julie Roberts, Steve Mitchell and Mike Stone.

More About SOULPATH:
It comes from the heart and soul and most importantly from the universe itself. It was early 1980's and Mike Stone and Steve Mitchell had met at Keele University. As well as enjoying the mystical realms of elves and dryads, beer and parties, laced with a smattering of study, they soon discovered a mutual interest in music making and writing with local bands. Steve and Mike already had graded examinations under their belts in their respective instruments so with a degree in music they started to attract attention further afield with Mike's flowing lyrics augmenting Steve's very individual music. Steve's musical direction of the European premier of Annie Warbucks led him into contact with Warner Chappels and in 1997 Steve and Mike formed Buzz'n'Bee Music to promote their composition. Writing in styles as diverse as folk, reggae, blues and traditional jazz they have been commissioned to compose for everything from Australian children's TV to a title track for a Warner Brothers film. More recently they were asked to write music to underscore a Granada TV series in the style of Clannad. It was at this time that the unexplored talent and magical vocals of Julie Roberts were discovered. Steve and Mike had already been prompted to compile a C.D. of their music and were working on a second one for empowerment and meditation when Julie arrived on the scene to record the vocal tracks. There was an instant spark between everyone and something magical was happening. They found a common interest in yoga, magic, alternative therapy and the esoteric which instantly transformed the music they were writing.

Circle of Fire with Cari Cole

Cari’s music inspires us to live the vision of a new dream; the dream of heaven on Earth. Inspired by author Don Miguel Ruiz's book,The Four Agreements, The Circle of Fire CD is rich in instrumental texture but beautifully spacious, honoring the integrity of its songwriting, which suggests a timelessness such as Carole King’s “Tapestry” or Joni Mitchell’s “Blue”. Producer Paul St. James has created a definitive soundscape for a music that transcends trend and a record that is highly accessible while remaining true to its authenticity and intent. Rooted by Cari’s exquisite piano, acoustic guitar and sonically pure vocals, the CD hosts a spectrum of fretless bass, ambient guitars, gypsy violin, native American flute, and melodic drums and percussion that flow throughout.

More About Cari Cole:
Cari Cole is an award winning New York singer-songwriter who has captured a steadily growing audience since her 2002 debut record, The Circle of Fire. Wondorous Journey - Traveling the World by Following Your Heart with Dean Jacobs

After thirteen years of success in the business world, Dean Jacobs asked himself a couple of questions: How much does one need to be happy? What is my dream? The answer to the latter was easy: to take a journey around the world! For nearly two years Dean Jacobs traversed the globe on a low budget adventure to better understand and know the world we all share. This journey is now captured in his book: Wondrous Journey- The World is Waiting for You. Living on 10-15 dollars a day, Dean wandered from Australia and Southeast Asia to the Middle East and Africa as he explored 28 countries. He crossed the equator 4 times, ate exotic foods and encountered fascinating animals. But more importantly in a world that we are told to be afraid of, Dean found something different. The kindness of the ordinary people in the world was the rule, not the exception. Near the beginning of his trip 9-11 occurred. Instead of stopping, he continued out of a realization that more then ever he needed to learn about the world. This is a story of a man who would stop at nothing to follow his dream and the magic that happens when one follows their heart. His book captures the heart of the journey with his stories and wonderful color photos.

More About Dean Jacobs:
For nearly two years Dean Jacobs traversed across the globe on a low budget adventure to better understand the world we all share. Dean Jacobs was born in Wahoo Nebraska. After living on a farm, his family moved to Fremont Nebraska when he was five. Growing up in the Midwest gave him an appreciation for the simple things in life. He graduated from Wayne State College earning a degree in Biology, with minors in Earth Science and Art. After graduating he worked in the administration of Wayne State College as the Assistant to the President, before moving on to Purina Mills. Eventually this path led him to Pfizer Pharmaceuticals where he was employed in sales/marketing for 10 years. After a great deal of soul searching Dean left the security of corporate America, and decided to pursue other dreams. This was the beginning of a process that would lead to a traveling adventure that would span twenty-two and half months and cover twenty-eight countries. Taking photos became a natural expression of the journey for Dean as he documented and verified the common ground of our humanity. To Dean, photography is a discovery process where something extraordinary can be found within the confines of ordinary life. "I am far more interested in real things, real experiences and real people then sitting at home watching fantasies on a television screen. I take photos of what I am drawn to: it may be a small child, a landscape or some world treasure that has been photographed millions of times. Initially, I take the photograph first for myself, with the larger intention of capturing a moment in life, a moment that has touched me in some profound way. However, it is my hope that others will also be touched as well in some small way when viewing my photography. It brings me great pleasure to share what I see. A moment is gone forever except for that crazy attempt to capture it on a negative and keep it preserved like a genie in a bottle for all time. But as insane as it is, I love doing it, over and over. I look at my photos and instantly I am taken to that place, the smell of the air, the feel of the hard ground, the taste of strange foods, the smile of a friendly face. With all of our amazing cultures in life, I have concluded we are far more alike then different. The intention of my photos is to focus on what is similar between you and me, and honoring the differences through acceptance. Then our world expands, creating more possibilities and more love. I offer my photos and my story as a gift, to move life forward in a simple and pure way." More about Dean Jacobs at: www.travel4life.org

Wildlife vs Politics in Alaska

The remote, northeastern corner of Alaska is home to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which politicians call ANWR, a nineteen-million-acre wilderness that may contain as much as 16 billion barrels of crude oil. Conservationists and developers have fought bitterly over the land for the last half-century, an era in which petroleum has virtually come to define Alaska. Struggling to combat the big-money politics that threaten the region, the conservation efforts of one couple, Olaus and Mardy Murie, made them legendary. Jonathan Waterman's latest book, Where Mountains Are Nameless - Passion and Politics in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, blends historical narrative with vivid tales of his journeys into the Arctic Refuge wilderness, creating a tension between past and present, science and politics, reflection and investigation. Since 1983, he has taken eighteen trips into the far North, and spent over two hundred days in and around the embattled Arctic Refuge. While paddling or trekking cross-country, Waterman encounters howling wolves, British Petroleum workers, Inupiat hunters, and the oil-ravaged Prince William Sound.

More About Jon Waterman:
Jonathan Waterman started shooting photographs on his expeditions three decades ago, but also found his calling as a writer and author. He has starred in and written films for television, including “The Logan Challenge” (PBS, 1991), “Surviving Denali” (ESPN, 1994), and “Odyssey Among the Inuit” (OLN, 2000). He's mostly known for his time exploring the North, detailed in six of his nine books and in journals such as the Washington Post, Adventure, Hooked On the Outdoors, Outside, Backpacker, Climbing, and Rock and Ice. In June 2005, W.W. Norton released his Where Mountains Are Nameless; Passion and Politics in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. More info at: http://jonathanwaterman.com

Bacon draws from his original research to analyze several key differences. Among them: Spiritual workers have higher needs for forgiveness and emotional support, Spiritual workers have higher needs to be valued and acknowledged, Spiritual workers have higher needs to trust their boss and coworkers, Nonspiritual workers have a higher tolerance for diverse value systems, Nonspiritual workers are less concerned if their managers are not personable, and Nonspiritual workers don't look for unconditional support from peers.

LightSpeak Transformational Arts with artist Leiah Bowden

An Explore Your Spirit with Kala Original! Listen along as visionary artist Leiah Bowden creates a Spiritual Energy Portrait of Kala while she interviews her on her work. The graphic you see here is the finished product that Leiah created of Kala. In this interview, Leiah describes what she sees in Kala's energy fields and chakras.

Lifelong meditator, intuitive artist and visionary, Leiah accesses a realm where our souls are unveiled and, from within a light trance state, creates these spiritual Energy Portraits in pastels as commissioned works of art and healing tools. Each Energy Portrait comes with guidance from the subject's and/or Leiah's higher self or angelic being. In addition to serving as individual tools for healing and personal growth, these remarkable images illustrate the shamanic origin of the crowns, helmets, headresses, and other ritual and costume elements that have come down to us from ancient civilizations.

More About Leiah Bowden:
My best work - whether it's creating paintings, essays or meals - is intuitive. I approach a piece knowing that it already exists somewhere, and what I need to do is to allow it to appear. Something flows through me and out my fingers for which I take only the credit for getting out of the way and knowing how to manage the media. In these moments, I am aware that I am in the altered state of consciousness I call Heaven. I hear - and sometimes sing - beautiful melodies; my left hand (I am right-handed) sometimes flutters or waves with the energy of Faery. Sometimes I am aware of unseen observers and guides. Sometimes I recieve direct, clear, verbal suggestions to use specific colors, to extend a line here or curve a line there. The signature I use on my paintings came to me one winter night after artist friends chided me for not signing my name to my artwork. "You need to sign your work!" they chorused. I felt that my name interfered with the energy flow the painting expressed. Later that night, as I stood ouside on the porch waiting for my dog to return from his errand, I asked All That Is to send me a signature. Immediately I felt and obeyed an urge to lean forward and trace something with my finger in the snow. It was a symbol that felt powerful, grounded, soaring, and mine. And rather than interfering with my work, I feel it seals it the way "Amen" seals a prayer. More at www.energyportraits.com

Medical Missions of Mercy in Haiti with Dr. Steven Landau

On January 5, a team of 10 AMURT volunteers arrived in Haiti amidst rumors of kidnappings, murders and other violence. The mission was to support the wonderful work already done by two yogic renunciates working with Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team. The specific task was to provide medical relief and eye care to those Haitians who had almost no such care available to them, both in Port au Prince and in the northern province of Anse Rouge, which had been hit hard by recent hurricanes.

At an organizational meeting on arrival, they decided to split up in two groups - one to serve the city folk and the other to head for the provinces. The medicines were split in two, with each group carrying over 4 trunks full of supplies, pharmaceuticals and vitamins.
The city group efforts were concentrated at Didi's school at Bourdon, which serves over 300 children, and Dada's school in Delmas, which serves over 450 children and houses adult literacy and computer classses as well. They were guarded by Frankie, a Haitian Karate instructor wearing khakies and drab and sunglasses and slouch hat. This group saw and treated over 100 people a day for a total of about 500 patients diagnosed and provided with medication. Clinics were free. In addition, 300 pairs of reading glasses were fitted and dispensed free.
