Looking into the eye of the tiger on Chinese New Year

Gong Xi Fa Cai! is Mandarin for Happy New Year, which is also pronounced as Gung Hay Fat Choy in Cantonese. February 14th, 2010,  is the New Year as celebrated in China and this year is the Year of the Tiger, which is also referred to as Geng Yin. The animal which corresponds to each new year, is based on the ancient tradition of Chinese Astrology with 12 zodiac animals, which are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

The Chinese New Year is the most important traditional holiday in China and is also referred to as the Spring Festival. The date of the new year is based on a lunar calendar, which has been used for centuries and is much older than the solar Gregorian calendar used in the west for most events.  This year, which is dated in the west as 2010, is Year 4707 in the chinese calendar. Since the lunar calendar follows the cycle of the moon, the date of the new year fluctuates each year, falling sometime between mid January and mid February.  In the west, lunar cycles are followed for some holidays and events, including the celebration of Easter, which is based on a lunar cycle, which is why it falls on a different date each year.

Chinese New Year is a joyous celebration incorporating body, mind and spirit traditions.  It is celebrated with gift giving, colorful decorations, extensive parties, spectacular firework displays and mult-generational celebrations. Families prepare their homes by cleaning them thoroughly and use brooms to sweep away any bad luck from the past, clearing the path for good fortune to enter the home in the new year. Auspicious symbols are hung in windows and on doors to bring in joy, wealth, long life and other positive affirmations.  It is revered as a time to let go of the past, release old feelings and open to a new year filled with hope, peace, abundance and joy.

2009 was the Year of the Ox, which was defined as a year of slow growth and a time to create stability. Those who worked hard on their endeavors in 2009, may not have seen much come to fruition during the year, but their work will have a good chance of being rewarded this coming year, though Tiger years can be tumultuous and a little tricky.  One of the careers that does well during an ox year is agriculture and this can be seen in review of 2009, as a powerful and positive focus was placed on the food we eat, with movies such as Food Inc as well as the desire to return to organic nurturing foods and a focus on how food is prepared and animals are treated. The going green campaign received tremendous attention during the year of the Ox.

This year, the Tiger, is unleashed. If you were born in 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, or 1998, you are a Tiger. To find out what Chinese Astrological sign that you are, visit here: http://www.gotohoroscope.com/chinese-astrology.html

The Tiger is on the opposite end of the energy spectrum in terms of animals and years. The Ox was plodding, slow, stabile, the Tiger leaps onto the scene, creating strong energy and raising passion wherever he goes.  This is exciting and many people are ready for something new to occur and see movement in their lives, in striking comparison to this past year, where everything seemed to be stuck in the mud and moving slowly, from finances, to creative endeavors, to working through relationships. Tiger years brings passion and powerful change. This can be activated in both positive and negative outcomes.  The urge to fight is greater, which can bring about positive changes in society, swiftly removing outdated ways of operating, but can also bring swift destruction and rebellion, depending upon the emotional intensity of the situation and whether cooler heads are able to prevail and direct the energy in the highest and best manner.  During a Tiger year, situations that are hanging on by a thread, have a good chance of breaking, including relationships, business partnerships and political agendas. One of the most significant Tiger years was 1974, which was the year of Watergate and the resignation of Richard Nixon.

Delving into greater detail, this is the year of the Metal/White Tiger. For more about what this year brings, read Albuquerque Metaphysical Examiner Raphael Simons article on: The Year of the Metal Tiger in Chinese Astrology: Predictions.

Perhaps it is a most fortituous sign, that the 2010 Chinese New Year falls on St. Valentine’s Day this year, culminating a time of celebration and joy with the energy of love in the west.  The Tiger is notoriously impulsive and wildly romantic, which may very well symbolize what is to come in this new year.

Wishing you great fortune in this New Year!

12 Gifts of Enlightenment – Give the Gift of Good Timing

Ask any expert on how they achieved their success and they’ll tell you that it’s a dedicated combination of hard work, timing, expert planning and a little bit of luck.  As we enter the new year and a brand new decade, perhaps it’s time to gather reinforcements to take those dreams and manifest them into reality.

This brings us to Gift Ten on the 12 Gifts of Enlightenment.
Gift Ten is – Give the Gift of Good Timing.

Mystics and seers have counseled through the ages that there are favored moments of opportunity, where intention can be directed and focused with greater clarity. A time honored tradition to assist with this planning is astrology. Conscious creators would be well advised to have an astrologer to work with on a long term basis. I have several that I consult with, especially when making a major life change. Consider the fact that when you are making a major decision on real estate, you consult a realtor, and you use an expert for financial planning and medical care. When timing is a crucial factor for a decision, whether for marriage, children, career, or even a better date to have elective surgery, shouldn’t you consult with an expert for some guidance and information?  One of my favorite astrologers is Marguerite Manning, an astrologer and author of Cosmic Karma: Understanding Your Contract with the Universe. Marguerite gets right down to the heart and the soul of the matter and astrologically provides answers and guidance to your most important questions. Want to know more about Marguerite and her book? Listen to my interview with her on the Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show.

For the metaphysician in your life who likes to work with timing down to the days and cycles and uses herbs and candles in their work, a helpful guide to give to them is:  The Spellcaster’s Reference: Magickal Timing for the Wheel of the Year by Eileen Holland. Eileen breaks it all down to the hours of the day, astrological influences and accompanying oils, herbs, plants and other ingredients. Eileen begins the book sharing the esoteric reference of “as above, so below”, which has been taught in mystery temples throughout the ages and guides the reader through the wheel of the year and its corresponding influences. This is a well crafted guidebook that practitioners will keep close by on the shelf to refer to throughout the year.

Been working on manifesting your dreams and feel like you need a boost?  Author Judika Illes book, Magic When You Need It: 150 Spells You Can’t Live Without covers Money, Career, Love, Sex, Marriage, Children, Home and Trouble. Judika has created a handy guide with straightforward instructions and easily obtainable ingredients to conceive a ‘power pack’ assisting you on your journey. Consider it a cross blending of old world charms with new world accessibility.  One of my favorite spells is on page 110, dealing with pest control. The solution that she offers in the book, is almost exactly the same as one I was taught by a shaman years ago, which just agains reminds us that universal truths in nature and spirituality are shared by cultures all around the world. Another favorite is on page 96, Find A Home, with step by step instructions to manifest your dream home. Judika has put in the hard work to gather all of this information and put it together in an easy reference guide for all that ails you.

A calendar to mark the cycles of the moon and holidays is always a great service. This year, consider buying a copy of the Farmers Almanac as well as The Witches Alamanac. The Witches Almanac offers astrological information for the year as well as stories and a wealth of information on nature and the animal kingdom.  I particularly enjoyed the article on the Fleur De Lis, as well as the article on magical crossroads and the healing and protective properties of garlic.

Whether you choose to use a reference guide, calendar or an astrologist, the most important aspect to accomplishing your goals is timing. Prepare as best as you can, with good advice and information, but also be aware that surprises will come up, no matter how hard you plan. The real trick is to accept change and to be open to seeing pitfalls as potentials in the making. As Peaceful Warrior author Dan Millman said, “I learned that we can do anything, but we can’t do everything… at least not at the same time. So think of your priorities not in terms of what activities you do, but when you do them. Timing is everything”.

2010 – The New Renaissance Begins

Happy New Year! This new year begins with a most auspicious sign- a Full Blue Moon in conjunction with a Mercury Retrograde. This is significant as it heralds a new cycle of energy, releasing the past and opening the door to unlimited possibilities. This new year and new decade, is going to bring a major shift in our conscious thinking and open the door to further self-realization.

Time has been moving at an unparalleled rate, which has brought us the gift of seeing our hopes, dreams, thoughts, and wishes manifest at a surprising and sometimes alarming rate. Truly this past decade has focused on the belief that ‘if we can think it, we can achieve it’.

As we’ve dared to dream and open our mind, the shift of ages from Pisces to Aquarius is gifting us with a never before seen outpouring of information. No longer are we reliant upon a particular university, library or reference text to provide information. From the heavens above, Aquarius has tipped the waters of illumination and knowledge from the gods back down to earth for us to receive. Through the air sign of Aquarius, we have seen this information fly quickly through the internet, connecting humanity on a global scale and providing information on any topic we can conceive of, at any time, with multiple resources to consider and cross reference. With this gift of knowledge in the new millennium, we’ve shared our life stories, bonded in social networks, blogged our thoughts, shopped and supported local and global businesses whose store fronts we may never see, learned about cultures throughout the world and now twitter our thoughts to thousands, as fast as we think of them.

This past decade was deemed the Age of Information and truly it has been, as many now complain of information overload, with so much available in hand. What will this new decade bring? We are proverbially set free to explore. Those that fail to see the opportunity waiting at this time, will regret in the future what they did not dare to try. As Mark Twain once said….. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover”.

On our evolution as Conscious Spiritual Beings, we’ve spent this last decade becoming Conscious Creators, playing with the new toys we’ve received. Beginning in 2010, the journey continues and evolves as we move from knowledge, into wisdom. What is the different between knowledge and wisdom you ask? Knowledge is the awareness of the information. Wisdom is gained from taking the knowledge, putting it into action, observing how the action causes various reactions and then gaining discernment of how it best can be used. Once these factors have all been put into play, the result is wisdom.

In this new decade, we are moving into a new Age of Enlightenment. The Aquarian information from the gods can no longer be contained, the Divine Feminine is being released in all her glory and we will once again see a Renaissance period, where great art, architecture, philosophy, literature and science will develop and flourish. During this decade the greatest minds will stir, to share, to illuminate and to build and create works and ideas that will be marveled around the world.

You dear reader, are one of these creators. If you have been waiting for a sign, if you have wondered – when is my time, this is it, we’ve arrived. 2010 is your date, your time to shine. Fly boldly now in the direction of your dreams and use all the resources at your disposal. In this decade we will connect mind, body and spirit as the ancients did, connecting with our muses, using our intuition and dreams to guide us and we’ll work in tandem on the spiritual and on the earth planes. It’s here, we’re here and this decade will be one of historic making proportions on every level. So Celebrate, Reciprocate and Go Create!

Remember, the best is yet to come…

A year in review, looking back over the election with T. Raphael Simons

T_Raphael_Simons3I made both a Chinese astrological chart and a western astrological chart of the Presidential inauguration on January 20th. The Chinese chart report is first. As the events these past several months are reflected in what the charts say, we can reasonably say, therefore, that what was predicted in the charts, will indeed happen.

President Obama was sworn in on January 20th, at 12:06 PM in Washington DC. Chinese astrological calculations show a picture of a long period of reform coming, and in spite of the challenges and oppositions that are bound to come up the new Administration will succeed in large measure. The energy at the time in which the new Administration began was contracting, not expanding. This means that the situation of the Nation, as seen in January, 2009, in general gets worse before it gets better; it takes time to turn around. (It is now August, 21st. The recession is just beginning slowly to turn around. It is most probable that the economy will pick up little by little through the later part of this year and through 2010.) Creative planning is being called for in the current Administration. Creative planning is the vital element for the success of the Administration. The time, as shown in the Chinese chart, calls for an independent leader, one who carefully weighs all sides and who acts forcefully in face of serious opposition.

Overall, the dynamics of the Chinese chart show a trend toward repolarization of wealth. This means the poor will ultimately benefit even though the getting there will be fraught with difficulties. The Government will be seeking out new and alternative solutions, but their efforts will exceed expected returns; they won’t be able to come through with all they promise because the opposition is growing in intensity throughout the term of the Administration. Financial resources being unstable, it will take considerable time to turn the situation around. The Chinese chart does show, however, increasing resourcefulness and storing up of money after the first year. The picture is complicated and difficult. The country is being divided by opposing forces. The opposition to the President doesn’t care that the President is popular and is doing all it can to undermine the President. It will continue this way and grow in virulence.

The second and third years of the Obama Administration promise to be very dynamic. Opposition to the President will become loud through the second year. And the fourth year shows a hidden danger coming up. The Chinese chart does not say from whom or to whom, but it does say that opposition will come up very strongly toward the end of the Presidential term. All through his Presidency, Obama will have challenges. It is an exciting time. And while the President does have enemies he appears to have protection as well.

President Obama’s hopes of unifying everyone, reaching across the aisle, will not work. Divisive factions are growing and will come to challenge him loudly especially toward mid-term. And while mid-term may bring up some radical choices, the President will receive assistance from key people right from the start and throughout the four years of his first term. It is probable that he will be reelected. He has the genius, or luck of turning adverse conditions to his advantage. President Obama glows with vitality and vigorously carries things through. His gift of attracting others, however, is double edged; it works both for and against him. He has a danger of becoming entangled in the snares of his political enemies. President Obama’s alliances will therefore not always be trustworthy. Notwithstanding, he is a clever politician.

The Western astrological chart for the inauguration had Mercury retrograde and combust showing Justice Roberts having a senior moment flubbing his administering of the Oath of Office. Some people had the opinion that the inauguration was made invalid because of this flub, however, according to the 22nd amendment of the Consititution, the inauguration was, indeed, valid. Notwithstanding, there was a second oath of office given to President Obama on January 21st at 7:35 PM at the White House. A brief analysis of it follows this report, but it doesn’t hold water beyond warning the President of the serious intentions of his opposition; there are no accidents; that chart does say something. The country is deeply divided and there are a lot of fearful, angry people that can stir up a lot of trouble.

At the time of the Presidential Inauguration the Moon was at 29 degrees Scorpio in the 7th house. This means the Nation will have something to weep about during the the current Administration. This position of the Moon tells of an ominous turning point in the affairs of the Government tied to trouble in foreign relations and turmoil at home. We need to be on the lookout for violent characters.

To allay the fears of some people: while the chart does point to notable deaths of Senators and other outstanding figures, it does not point to the death of the President; the President is protected and has great popularity. The highest branches of the Government will be able to flourish and exercise power under him. But while the President has the ability to build up something of lasting value he will be vexed; he won’t find himself in the best of circumstances all the time and he has enormous problems to deal with.

The Inauguration chart showed the President turning his attention to the real estate crisis, something he already has done. The chart also showed the following concerns of concern: trouble to children involving poverty and crime, illness coming from afar (swine flu), rising mortality rate, increase in crimes against women, crooks in the financial markets, international criminals, in other words, vice and immorality rooted in the past.

The Inauguration chart also showed that there would be much activity in Government circles involving banking and labor, also disgrace to public officials and people in high places of business; in other words, we will see plenty of scandals involving finances, banking and labor. We’ve already seen some.  The Administration’s aims will likely be vexed by shifting circumstances and factional struggling, causing changes of mind related to complex financial issues. The Administration’s financial and social plans will therefore be thwarted, compromised, or delayed to the discomfort of the public while the public is being intimidated by nefarious media characters. Some hoped for, and important social and economic reforms will get bogged down and delayed, in other words. The people started out with high hopes and need to be more realistic lest they be disappointed.

In two years from the time of the Inauguration radical developments will likely come up in the Congress. There will be dramatic developments and a likely upset in the country at that time. The opposition will get very loud. And in four years there will be a noteworthy loss that will bring weeping to the Nation. There is something tragic shown in this chart that will affect the Nation. Other charts over the years will reveal what this means. No matter, the President is protected, and will likely be reelected for a second term.  We can expect religious disputes to come up. The Administration favors taking bold new scientific, technological and medical directions that will attract dissention from religious fundamentalists. The new Administration will encourage innovation and invention, nonetheless. Technology is highly favored and will the an area for positive international cooperation.

The chart also shows that projects that were put aside or underfunded in the past Administration will come up in the future to engage the new Administration in working to build hospitals, schools, and such public works as roads, bridges and levies. There is also a call to improve interstate and international commerce and shipping. There are plans on the table for a new trans-continental rail system.  This year, when Saturn enters Libra after the end of October, the power of the President will be considerably strengthened and the economy should show some encouraging signs of improvement.

The chart also shows elements in the media grasping for power and stirring up a hornet’s nest that contribute to conditions of danger that must be watched; there is danger of terrorism. Again, the Inauguration chart says that it is most unlikely the President will be harmed in spite of the dangers, but it is possible that someone close to the President will be in danger. It is also very possible that in four years an act of violence will come to affect the Nation. But that has to be confirmed by other charts along the course of time to be predicted with any certainty. The Inauguration chart, however, does point to turbulence and danger of violence developing through the four years of the Administration. Wisdom tells us to be watchful. The violent talk on the media is something to be watched. Dissention and turmoil will develope over the Administration’s economic and social policies. Rebels and rabble-rousers will rise up to stir up riots, strikes, and destruction of property. These violent forces must be taken very seriously. As of this date, August 21st, you can see it already happening. It will not stop so easily. It is very serious.

The chart of the second oath of office, given on January 21st at 7:35 PM at the White House casts a shadow over the Presidency altogether. The second chart is extremely negative and shows that there are dark forces militating against the Government, and the Presidency itself; these forces must not be ignored. This chart lends serious weight to the negative indications of the first Inauguration chart, and shows the enormity of the problems that confront the Obama Administration.

Astrology meets football: Use the stars above to pick the stars on the field

kala_ambroseTalk about armchair quarterbacking with a twist. Courtney Roberts has an M.A. in cultural astronomy, specializing in the history of astrology in ancient religion with more than 25 years of experience in consulting, teaching, publishing, research and organizational work. Courtney brings a refreshing and unique perspective to the whole idea of cosmic influences in our daily lives.

With football season ready to rumble, I sat down with Courtney to discuss the astrological impact on this year’s NFL lineup. Courtney shares not only predictions, but also looks into the personalities of the players and candidates. I’m not the only person to discuss football with Courtney, she was just on ESPN reporting about astrology and football. If you love the game or have a friend or family member who does, this is one interview not to miss!

Kala: Courtney, nice to chat with you again.. We’ve had you on The Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show as a guest discussing your book, The Star of the Magi and also again to discuss the impact of astrology on the president election in 2009. It’s wonderful to now have you here for my column on the Examiner.

Courtney: Thanks, Kala! It’s great to talk with you again!

Kala: Few people know that I’m a fan of football and have always loved the game. College, Pro, even a backyard game of flag football, I enjoy it all. ESPN recently had you on to discuss astrology and how it can demonstrate real astrological principles in action. Tell us about this, how did you first determine that you could use astrology to predict football and other sports?

Courtney: Kala, I’m excited to learn that you’re such a big football fan! I just love the game, and the people in it. I was first introduced to sports astrology back in 1994, and immediately became fascinated with the proposition that sports presents to astrology. Sports, in general, and football, in particular provide the perfect proving ground for astrology, and a great forum for observing astrological principles in action. It’s one area of human endeavor that is completely objective, verifiable, and timed right down to the very minute. After over a dozen years of observations, I’ve learned so many amazing things about astrology from football, and from watching how all the planetary possibilities play out. While astrology is certainly not the only factor in winning, I can say that it definitely is a factor.

Kala: All right, let’s get right into it. This season, what do you see. Can you give us an astrological rundown on how the season’s going to go?

Courtney: The season gets off to a rather surprising start, with some startling upsets, and grinds down to a grueling end, by January. All in all, a tough season with some difficult disappointments before the eventual champion emerges in February.

Kala: Brett Favre turns 40 in October, reports tell me he was born: October 10, 1969 in Gulfport, Mississippi. What do you see in his astrological chart that may have caused him to retire from Green Bay in 2008, then come right back out of retirement moving on to the New York Jets in 2008 and now with the Minnesota Vikings in 2009? Why does he push on at his age, when most other quarterbacks have retired at this point in their career?

Courtney: I believe the biggest factor in Brett’s original decision to retire is his birth date – he’s getting on. That’s no surprise, but it’s no secret that Librans are notoriously indecisive. Relationships have so much bearing on anything he does. His relationships in Green Bay were obviously wearing thin, plus he’s worried about spending enough time on his family relationships. Still, once he gets down on the farm, he misses the game, and maybe that’s the most important relationship of all. The guy just loves to play.

Kala: Regarding Brett Favre, he is the only player to win the AP Most Valuable Player three consecutive times and he led the Packers to seven division championships, four NFC championships games and two Superbowls. He holds many NFL records including: most career passing yards, most pass completions, and most career touchdown passes. Like him, love him or despise him, the man has skills. What do you see in his chart that foretold of this and can parents look at charts of their children and see similar potential?

Courtney: Brett has a great chart – again, no surprise there. His combination of the Sun conjunct Jupiter in Libra, in a square aspect/angle to Mars in Capricorn, is just about as good as it gets. He’s gifted, fortunate, attractive, and highly competitive. He’s also been very fortunate in his relationships, beginning with his first coach, his father. There are a number of pro athletes born on or about the same day as Favre, including figure skater Nancy Kerrigan. For success in sports, a strong aspect between the Sun and Jupiter is a big help, and obviously, one would need a very macho, competitive Mars. One word of advice for parents: astrological potential always manifests in action. If your child loves sports, and loves to play, that’s always a good sign.

Kala: This year we celebrate the 50th season of the American Football League. Originally, there were eight charter teams which included the: Buffalo Bills, the Dallas Texans (now Kansas City Chiefs), Los Angeles Chargers (now San Diego Chargers), Houston Oilers (now Tennessee Titans), Boston Patriots (now New England Patriots), Denver Broncos, New York Titans (now New York Jets) and the Oakland Raiders. Any astrological thoughts as to what this particular birthday will bring for these teams? Interesting to me as well, that this season kicks off during a Mercury Retrograde, how will that affect the teams in September?

Courtney: Oh Kala, you are a fan! How exciting: 50 years of AFL football! It was a very Leo league from day one, full of competitive drama, big plays, high-flying offense, and larger than life heroes. I’ve been an AFL gal all my life. The original charter teams are all going through significant reorganizations, just like the rest of us, trying to keep up with the every-changing economic landscape, but make no mistake about it, they’re still going strong. Lamar Hunt and his original partners had the right idea at the right time, and the AFL charts serve as a model for good astrological business organization. You’re right, the season does kick off while the planet Mercury is Retrograde (appears to be moving backwards) but I’m more concerned about a much larger configuration: Saturn in Virgo in opposition (180 degrees from) to the planet Uranus in Pisces. That’s signaling significant upsets and big surprises in store, and it directly affects the birth planets of key figures like Mike Tomlin, the Head Coach of the league’s reigning champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Still, whatever happens in Sept./Oct. could be old news by January, when an entirely different planetary picture shapes up.

Kala: This season’s SuperBowl, Super Bowl XLIV will be held on February 7, 2010 in Miami, Florida at Dolphin Stadium.
Two questions:
1. What can you tell us astrologically about this date surrounding the SuperBowl…

Courtney: It features some very exact alignments between Jupiter in Pisces and Pluto in Capricorn which strongly favor clayers/coaches who were born with Planets in the early degrees of Water signs like Pisces and Scorpio, and Earth Signs like Taurus and Virgo. It also features a very difficult square (90 degree angle) between Saturn in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn, which puts a rather harsh spotlight on players/coaches with planets at 4 degrees of the Cardinal Signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn). These guys will be playing at the highest level of intensity, but will most likely be frustrated in the end and the championship will go to the guys with the good Jupiter aspects.

Kala: 2. Once the two teams are announced who will play in the Super Bowl, could you look at the date and predict which team would have a better advantage according to the date?

Courtney: I have to say that the Super Bowl tends to be pretty easy to predict, especially on the point spread. That’s mainly because it’s such a big game, with so much attention focused on it that the astrological indicators are quite large. I cast charts for the beginning, middle and end of the game, and analyze the performance of key players within that time frame. It’s a lot more technical than most folks realize, and a lot of math!

Kala: I’ve got to ask about my favorite team, the New Orleans Saints. Any good news for us this year?

Courtney: Oh Kala! You? A Saints fan? They are one team that has an historically documented lack of luck, so I admire your loyalty! They’ve got a good lineup this year, and while it will be far from their worst season, … I daresay their luck will once again run out in the end. Sorry, but, Someday!

Kala: I’m from Louisiana Court, got to love the Saints and LSU, Geaux Tigers! Thanks so much for joining us Courtney for this chat. If your schedule permits, we’d love to bring you back early next year to discuss the two teams who will play in the Superbowl.

Courtney: That’s a great idea. At the beginning of the season, there are so many variables in play that it’s just too early to try to narrow the field down. Once we get to December/January the data becomes a lot more manageable and we can begin to get a lot more specific. So yes, I would love to come back, and I’m always happy to talk about pro Football, America’s game!

Chinese Autumn Season 2009

T_Raphael_SimonsChinese Autumn began this year on August 7th at 18:07 Beijing time, or 05:07 AM ET. The Chinese seasons always start at the middle of the Western calendar seasons, that is why Chinese Autumn may seem to come so early for a westerner. In the context of western astrology, the Chinese seasons begin at 15 degrees the fixed signs, Autumn beginning at 15 degrees Leo, Winter beginning at 15 degrees Scorpio, Spring beginning at 15 degrees Aquarius, and Summer beginning at 15 degrees Taurus. In the Chinese system, Autumn is the season of the element Metal.

The signs for the Autumn chart are as follows:sun

  • the year sign is Earth Ox
  • the month is Water Monkey
  • the day is Wood Monkey
  • the hour is Fire Rabbit

The predominant elements in the chart are Earth, Metal, and Water, and is predominantly Yang. This means that the energy of the Autumn this year is actively concentrative. The natural course this Fall will be for all matters to settle, and for nonessentials to be eliminated. The chart, having so much Metal and Water, is cold. Fire is very weak. Therefore the season calls for Wood. Wood is the vital element for this Fall. That means that it is essential to make decisions. Matters must now be settled, decisions must be made and nonessentials must be thrown out of you are to stay in tune with the Tao of the time.

Reduced to an I Ching hexagram, the signs gives us Hexagram 44: Coming to Meet, line 1. Curb evil at its inception. Where you find evil entering your life, check and correct it immediately. If you let it run unchecked it will cause misfortune.

This Autumn season favors people with a solitary character and those who work in independent professions. This, according to the traditional Chinese description, includes teachers, psychics, mediums, astrologers, metaphysicians, scholars, doctors, researchers, people who work behind the scenes, writers, designers and librarians.

Despite its severe indications, the chart has two Tien Yi, or Sky Medicine Stars. Tien Yi is the luckiest of all the stars; it resolves most predicaments. The chart also has Tian de Gui Ren, or Heavenly Virtue Star which helps to stabilize life and clear away obstacles. This is especially good for women getting married. The chart also favors studies, and has good indications for traveling and for friendly and beneficial interactions between people in business. The chart, having strong Metal, but relying on Wood says that Western powers are strong, but all depends on cultivating the creative possibilities in the East. In other words, what happens in Asia is key to unlocking the power of the West at this time. Without the needed help of Asia the world will stagnate.

  • The Autumn season, for those born under the sign Pig or Rat, means this is a time for you to increase your knowledge and to develope your resources. It is favorable for Pig to work creatively and to be decisive this Fall. For Rat it is important, not only to generate your resources, but to accept the help of friendly people and to avoid conflicts; don’t try to force your way against odds. Both Pig and Rat, needing insights, will benefit by seeing the astrologer or psychic this Fall.
  • For those born under the sign Ox this is a time for saving up money and for turning your attention to your work. You may be very fortunate if you do.
  • For those born under the sign Tiger or Rabbit this is a time to assert yourself against odds while yielding to conditions you can’t control. For a woman Tiger or Rabbit, this may be a season of love. For Tiger this Fall is favorable for traveling, moving or going forward with new work. It may also be a more favorable period for you financially. For Rabbit this Fall favors creative activity.
  • If you were born under the sign Dragon this Fall favors you in business and encourages you to build up your money. It is best if conditions in your personal life be peaceful now.
  • If you were born under the sign Snake or Horse this Fall is the time to pay attention and make money. For Horse this is also a lucky time for romance. And for Snake this is a good time for studies and any academic activity, also for using your intelligence to solve any problem you might have.
  • If you were born under the sign Sheep this is a time for creative work and for building up your money. It also favors receiving help from friendly people; lucky doors may open for you.
  • If you were born under the sign Monkey or Rooster, the Fall favors building up yourself, circulating among your peers, while acting independently and welcoming competition in business. Monkey may be especially lucky in resolving problems and will find others willing to offer help when needed. Friendly people are coming your way. For Rooster this is an especially lucky season for romance.
  • If you were born under the sign Dog this is a season to work hard and build up money. The elements of the season will give you strength.

Chinese Astrological Portrait of President Obama

T_Raphael_SimonsAllowing that the given date and time of his birth is correct, President Obama was born in the year of Metal Ox, month of Wood Sheep, day of Earth Snake and hour of Wood Dog. The predominant elements of  President Obama’s chart are Fire and Earth. This gives him a big heart and the ability to take in huge amounts of information.

President Obama is an intuitive type. He has the ability to see the entire picture in a flash and to act on the spur of the moment. He also has a tendency to worry a lot and to want to take care of everybody. To him the entire nation is family and he aims to do right by it, at least according to his vision of what right means. President Obama has learned to be tough through emotionally challenging times in his life. He has power to earn respect and to break through all barriers. His chart has a configuration that shows up in the charts of many historical heroes. He’s a heroic type, in other words. obama_portrait_146pxHe is authoritative, aspiring, vigorous, alert, firm, persevering, highly competitive, combative, decisive and bold. He is not afraid of hardships. And he loves challenges. He upholds justice and has high tolerance for external pressures.

Under extreme pressure, however, he can become intolerant in his dealings with others, especially those under him. He intends to have his way. He tends to be rigorous and he places great emphasis on discipline. Those working under him will find it difficult to keep up with him. Obama glows with vitality. He is bent on carrying things through to the end. He has the distinctive ability to envision the future and will work tirelessly to make what he wants to see come true. He is in tune with the mass of people of the land and stands for the underdog. Because he lives in an atmosphere of challenge, and he is sure to meet up with serious challenges from powerful opponents, his career will become unstable from time to time. In the event of extreme conditions, however, he can escape unscathed. He has great luck.

The astrological indications for President Obama in 2009, the year of Earth Ox, point to challenging times. President Obama’s, energy and abilities of foresight are being tested. 2009 is characterized by ups and downs for President Obama. He is turning a corner. He has plenty to worry about. People around him who’s help he wants are not all in agreement with one another or with him. Political divisiveness seriously challenges him. This kind of opposition, however, is nothing new to President Obama; his birth chart shows that he functions easily and most naturally in a challenging environment. DC is his playground, and all the trouble he will have will make him stronger. Trouble with opponents will build up through the year.

In 2010, the year of Metal Tiger, troubles previously kept quiet will very likely surface to intensify his challenges and bring him to experience times of out and out clashes; this will be a precarious time for people working under President Obama. Between 2010 and 2011, President Obama will enter a new 10-year cycle, according to his Chinese astrological chart. The new cycle shows that there will be some times of surprising events and developments in his life. While his vitality and creativity will increase there will be fights, or major challenges, especially in the years and months of Tiger, Snake and Monkey. If President Obama is re-elected, the years of Snake (2013) and Monkey (2016) will come in his second term. When challenged, President Obama will likely overwhelm his opposition. The beginning of his new cycle will come at the cusp of President Obama’s mid-term in 2010-2011, when he will be seriously confronted by trenchant opponenets. The year of Metal Rabbit, 2011, shows President Obama all the more forceful in driving his agendas forward. If he is thwarted in getting his way, 2011 will be fraught with frustrations for him. Probably it will be a combination of the two.

President Obama acts as a catalyst in this country. It is most likely that we will see the economic conditions changing for the better and becoming healthier through the coming months and years even though President Obama’s detractors would have us believe differently. What he is doing is stimulating alternative growth and development in many areas. It is most highly probable that President Obama will be re-elected for a second term.

The Solar Eclipse of July 22, 2009

T_Raphael_SimonsThe solar eclipse at 29 degrees fifty six minutes Cancer was at 2:34 AM Greenwich Mean Time on July 22nd, or 10:34 PM Eastern Daylight Time on July 21st. The first thing to say is that a solar eclipse may have either a positive or negative affect in one’s personal life depending on how the eclipse aspects one’s natal planets. If, for example, you have planets at 29 degrees Cancer, Libra, Capricorn or Aries you will be challenged by the eclipse. If you have planets at 29 degrees Virgo or Pisces the eclipse will favor you. If you have planets at 00 degrees Gemini or Sagittarius the eclipse will affect a turning point of sorts in your affairs. To get a complete picture of what the eclipse means for you personally, you will either have to read your own chart or have an astrologer do that for you. Please note: this report is about probabilities in world events as shown by the eclipse.

To find out what the eclipse means for the world, I made charts for London, Paris, Bruxelles, Berlin, Moscow; Jerusalem, Beirut, Amman, Damascus; Teheran, Delhi, Jakarta; Beijing, Anbyon North Korea, Tokyo, Wellington NZ; and Washington DC. I also looked at relevant Johndro locality charts, and at the national charts of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Zaire for added detail.

A major solar eclipse such as this one signals an ending and new beginning in the world, however difficult. The eclipse is at 29 degrees Cancer. Twenty-nine degrees means a weeping matter is coming to the world with this eclipse. The affects of a solar eclipse last for at least one year.

The charts for London, Paris and Bruxelles have the eclipse in the 2nd house, showing the troubled finances of western Europe and the EU and pointing to coming burdensome taxation, heavy expenditures and losses of revenue, wasted public money, and unstable conditions in the money market and in the stock markets. Financial conditions in the EU will fluctuate with some deep losses. The chart for Berlin shows the eclipse in the 1st house and points to serious discontentment and unrest amongst the general public in Germany and all of central Europe. There may come some surprising changes in the government of Germany because of this. The charts for Jerusalem, Beirut, Damascus and Ammon also have the eclipse in the 1st house showing general discontentment among the people. This tells us that Middle East will become more restless and unstable in the coming months. If we look at the band that runs approximately between 10 degrees East longitude and 36 degrees East longitude, or the area running roughly between Germany and Syria, and extend it down to south latitudes into the continent of Africa, we will find the same unsettling indications showing up in much of Central, East and South Africa. Of special interest are Libya, Chad, Sudan, Ethopia, Zaire, Uganda, and south all the way to South Africa. This whole region of the world is in considerable ferment. Of note, the national chart of Zaire has Mercury at 29 degrees Cancer in the 4th house, and ruling the 6th house. It is possible that the eclipse will trigger an epidemic in Zaire.

The charts for Moscow and Teheran put the eclipse in the 12th house, indicating serious behind the scenes trouble involving prisons, possibly relating to victims of political intreague. The chart for India puts the eclipse in the 11th house indicating changes in the Cabinet, troubles and difficulties in Parliament, dissentions and disagreements among members, also sickness, indisposition or death of a member of the government. Saturn in the India chart is in the 1st house showing the country taking a serious outlook. Venus in the India chart is in the 10th house exactly square Saturn and square Uranus confirming the possibility of sickness or death of a member of the government, possibly a lady, and/or the unpopularity of someone in the highest of the government circles.

The eclipse as affects Afghanistan and Pakistan shows the problems in Afghanistan related to opium growers funding terrorists who secretly cross over into Pakistani territory. It will be extremely difficult to control this sort of activity.

The charts for China, Japan and Korea have the eclipse at the zenith. We can expect some dramatic events to occur in East Asia involving these countries. Such an eclipse as this in the 10th house is a sign of the defeat of the government and/or heads of major corporations of pivotal importance to these nations. East Asia is heading for major changes now.

The solar eclipse may also play a role in earthquakes and volcanic activity. Areas that deserve watching include China and Japan. The Johndro locality chart confirms the possibility of earthquake activity in far eastern Asia. The Johndro chart draws a line north-south from Kamchatka Pennisula and the Kuril Islands just northeast of Japan down to Papua New Guinea. This may trigger activity in the whole region of the islands that surround the eastern, southeastern and southern sides of Asia. The Johndro charts also point to the central Atlantic, or 30 degrees west longitude, that could indicate volcanic activity increasing at the bottom of the ocean there. The eclipse appears at the zenith over the middle of the Atlantic in the Johndro chart. This would also make it a risk, at times, to cross the Atlantic by air or water. There might be a big storm coming across the ocean after the eclipse as well.

The chart for Wellington, NZ shows nothing noteworthy. This means that the range of earthquake activity indicated by the eclipse is limited to the area around East Asia. If it happens in the sea there would be tidal wave activity. The sign Cancer suggests that possibility.

Finally, the eclipse chart in the US puts the eclipse in the 5th house. This suggests that we may hear of some more deaths in the entertainment field. The chart also points to plenty of wrangling to come in the House of Representatives.

Affects of the eclipse may happen immediately or as repercussions when planets come to aspect the eclipse degree. The first repercussions may occur when the Moon comes to square the eclipse degree on July 27th, and opposition the eclipse degree on August 4th. The Moon traveling around the heavens once a month may touch off the eclipse degree several times over the course of the year following the eclipse. Venus comes to conjunction the eclipse degree on August 25th and 26th. Mars comes to conjunction the eclipse degree on October 15th and 16th. The Sun squares the eclipse degree on October 22nd. Then the Sun comes to opposition the eclipse degree on January 19th. It is said the effects of a solar eclipse can last three years. My experience tells me that the effects last one year and then fade out.

The May/June 2009 Lunation

t_raphael_simonsThe lunation period beginning with the new moon on May 24th and culminating with the full moon on June 7th, as read from Washington D.C., points out the following developments in the U.S.:

The new moon falling in the 12th house points, on the one hand, to an increase in crime, and trouble in connection to hospitals and prisons, and on the other hand, to possible legislative developments that aim to benefit the poor and improve housing conditions, especially in impoverished locations. These legislative developments, however, will likely be held back or up-staged, and by full moon, conditions of crime and poverty along with poor conditions in hospitals and prisons will only have worsened. Crime appears linked to deaths by contaminated drugs, or poisoning. There may also be deaths in the country linked to contaminated foods.

The new moon chart shows sudden and unexpected developments in Government circles that will require careful management. These appear linked to international relations and trade that will loom up in importance by full moon. These developments are also connected to problems in big business, the stock market, public expenditures and government bailouts. On a positive note, the entire lunation period favors the areas of publishing and entertainments.

The Chinese chart made for the lunation period shows a continuing tendency in the country to worry. The entire summer period, according to the Chinese chart for the summer, has very strong indications of a general condition of anxiety in the country. The lunation chart, in addition, points to a growing spirit of intolerance and shows the need to cultivate calm reflection to remedy poor planning and bad decision making. This is a weak period for business, and people in general are being competitive. The Chinese chart also shows distinct indications of romance. Romance in an atmosphere of intolerance makes for a dangerous atmosphere. Relationships, including marriages are vulnerable. Nonetheless, this is a favorable time for people to get married.

The Chinese chart reduced to an I Ching hexagram gives us hexagram 27, The Corners of the Mouth, line 6. The hexagram’s image is that of a dragon in a deep pool. It tells us to hold to the good and keep far away from evil actions. Pay attention to providing nourishment, and be mindful of your words. The 6th line advises us to persevere despite difficulties. The advice for those in positions of power is to nourish others impartially. Recognition of responsibilities will being good fortune.
